Kelly is the co-founder and CEO of Blue Marble Energy. Blue Marble Energy was founded as a synthesis of Kelly’s professional and personal passions in environmentalism, politics, and sustainable business. Kelly has extensive political strategy experience in local, regional and national campaigns. His resume includes work in the offices of Washington State Governor Gary Locke and Seattle Mayor Greg Nickels. Kelly’s business experience includes working with Paul Allen’s Vulcan, the Greater Seattle Chamber of Commerce, and as Executive Director of the Alki Foundation. Kelly currently serves on the board of directors at the Woodland Park Zoo and Seafair, as well as in an advisory capacity to several Seattle area startups. His dedication to alternative energy and clean technology led him to found BME with James Stephens in May 2005. The company has been hailed as a pioneer of petroleum displacement through renewable biochemicals and bioenergy.

Kelly was a theater actor for four years in a show called Sex in Seattle.

James Stephens

Vice President and Chief Science Officer

James is co-founder, VP and Chief Science Officer of Blue Marble Energy. James brings a strong background in industrial microbiology to Blue Marble, with particular focus on alternative energy generation through fermentation as well as pathogen detection and control technologies. James has conducted extensive research and development in microbiology, including ways to make commercially viable applications for pathogenic organisms in both the industrial and medical diagnostic markets. James’s strong interest in alternative energy has led him to carry out independent research on the use of microorganisms to generate clean energy. James began his education in Chemical Engineering before moving on to graduate with honors in Microbiology and Medical Technology, with an emphasis on Industrial Microbiology from the University of Montana. Most recently, James worked as Director of Microbiology and New Product Development with an international medical diagnostic company.

James used to be a dedicated spelunker while living in South Dakota, but after getting lost for a period that could be measured on a calendar in the abandoned Holy Terror goldmine, let’s just say he doesn’t like underground spaces anymore.

Devin Elliot

Chief Operations Officer

Devin Elliot brings a passion for alternative energy, environmentally responsible and sustainable solutions to Blue Marble Energy. As Chief Operations Officer, Devin also brings business management skills and inexorable energy to the company. Prior to joining the Blue Marble Energy team, Devin was the founder of his own algae-to-energy company, as well as the owner/operator of a construction firm.

Devin once tried to answer a cell phone while hitting a jump in Park City, Utah. At approximately 25 feet in the air and traveling some 70 feet to make the landing, he figured he had enough time. He didn't.

Colby Underwood

Vice President of Business Development

Colby serves as Vice President of Business Development to Blue Marble Energy. Prior to joining the Blue Marble team, Colby founded and managed several companies including Colby Underwood Consulting LLC, a Seattle-based company that focused on developing funds for political candidates/groups, non-profit organizations, and start-up companies. Over the past decade, Colby has raised over $62M in funds for a diverse set of clients. Colby brings a vast network of contacts and relationships, both regional and national, to Blue Marble Energy. He also serves on the board of directors for several organizations in the Western Washington region including Senior Services of Snohomish County, The Washington Bus, and Operation Nightwatch.

During her time at Scripps, her passion for sustainability led her to co-found a student run biodiesel cooperative that is still active today. She has merged her journalistic interest with her Mandarin Chinese skills to run production for a documentary film in Beijing.

Julia once interviewed David Hasselhoff about homelessness in Los Angeles, and has hosted a TV variety show in front of a live studio audience in Hangzhou, China.

Courtney Ryan-Petterson

Sidney Rittenberg & Associates
International Consultant, China

Advisory Board

Sidney Rittenberg

Chinese Business Consultant

Sidney Rittenberg has known every Chinese leader: Mao Zedong and Zhou Enlai, the notorious Gang of Four, Deng Xiaoping, and the present president and premier.

The Army trained Mr. Rittenberg in Chinese Studies during World War II, and sent him to China. He later joined the UN Relief Program, met and formed a friendship with Zhou Enlai, and in 1946 accepted the invitation to help train Chinese journalists working in English.

He became a leading translator for the works of Mao Zedong, and was the only American citizen accepted into the Chinese Communist Party, until the Cultural Revolution. In China, Mr. Rittenberg found Yulin, his dream girl and lifetime partner; she has been for 48 years the source of his happiness and the strength behind his achievements.

Sixteen of Rittenberg's 35 years in China were spent as a prisoner in solitary confinement on charges of being an American spy. He was freed in 1977 and declared a true friend of China. His family became a myth and a legend, giving them easy entrée to China's leaders - a great advantage for their consulting work.

As consultants, Mr. Rittenberg and Yulin have helped clients such as Intel, Nextel, Levi Strauss, Teledesic, and ICO, as well as CBS's Dan Rather and Mr. Rittenberg's close friends, Mike Wallace and the Reverend Billy Graham.

Mr. Rittenberg has appeared on virtually every major TV and radio comment program, and frequently gives seminars on the China business. He has been a professor of History at the University of North Carolina, where an endowed chair has been announced in his honor. He is currently a visiting professor of China Studies at Pacific Lutheran University.

Mr. Rittenberg's 35 years in China are chronicled in The Man Who Stayed Behind, a book he co-authored with senior Wall Street Journal writer Amanda Bennett.

Until May 2007, he was Chief Scientist, GE Global Research, Torrance, CA. As the Chief Scientist, Dr. Minh was responsible for the organization's overall technical objectives on fuel cells, oversaw the broad technical roadmap and R&D direction, and served as the Principal Investigator of GE fuel cell programs and the primary technical representative to customers and industry. From 2001-2004, he was Manager, Fuel Cells and led the fuel cell group at GE to develop SOFCs for commercialization. He was responsible for group performance and provided technical direction, coordinated group activities, and assisted in business strategic planning.
